In this incredible expedition you will experience both spectacular rafting and trekking. We will start with rafting on the Apurimac River , a world class exciting whitewater experience deep within a 6,600 ft . canyon, rated as one of the best rafting trips in South America . We depart on our trip from the city of Cusco ( 12,000 ft .), which was the heart of the Inca Empire . Apurimac is a Quechua word meaning "Speaker of the Gods." This river is the most direct source of the Amazon, making it one of the longest rivers in the world. The wildlife we might encounter in this remote canyon includes river otters, bob cats, foxes, condors, torrent ducks and cormorants.
After drying out from rafting and re-energizing in Cusco we begin our trek to the famous lost city of the Incas – Machu Picchu . This trek follows a remote and ancient footpath in the same region of the Inca trail, but one which is less traveled and offering more spectacular views. This route provides a magnificent wilderness alternative for those who wish to take the less congested trekking routes. O n the trail we pass through an amazing progression of ecological zones starting in sparsely vegetated alpine meadows, which are flanked on either side by two spectacular 20,000 ft . glaciated peaks. We then walk down through subtropical forest and, eventually, meet up with the end of the famous Inca Trail. At the end of this trek, we arrive at Machu Picchu , the lost city of the Incas, which is cloaked in rainforests and perched along the Peruvian ridge crest, reminding us how its isolated location once eluded the Spanish Conquistadors.
